Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan
Chosen by: Tracey
Irish writer Claire Keegan has become renowned for novellas that punch above their wordcount.
Her 2021 novel Small Things Like These though garnered her significant sales as well as critical appreciation.
Set in a small Irish town in 1985, it sees coal merchant Bill Furlong making a discovery which forces him to consider his own past and the dark secrets that nobody in the community seems to want to confront.
Although only around 120 pages in length, Keegan's writing mines deep emotions, from despair to hope in an exploration of a key part of recent Irish history.
Small Things Like These was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and won the Orwell Prize for political fiction. A film adaptation is due for release later this year.
