So Long, See You Tomorrow by William Maxwell
Chosen by: Janet
William Maxwell's So Long, See You Tomorrow, was first published in two parts in the New Yorker in 1979.
It quickly gained appreciation from critics and readers though, and when published as a novel made the shortlist for the 1981 Pulitzer and won the US's prestigious National Book Award in 1982.
Set in Maxwell's home town of Lincoln, Illinois, it centres on a murder in the community in 1922. Half a century later, the community still bears the scars as our guilt-ridden narrator looks back on events.
The book has continued to win fans, and in 2019 it was listed by the BBC among the 100 most influential novels. And in the last year it has gained an even greater audience with Waterstone's listing the novella as one of its books of the year.
Maxwell died in 2000, and was a hugely-respected literary editor of the New Yorker and an outstanding essayist. but this novella looks set to be his most enduring legacy.
